Canadian Bilingual Labels: Translating and Editing Over 3,000 Labels in Less Than 3 Months for Kmart

Bilingual labelling and packaging for Kmart

Kmart, a retail company based in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, United States, operates a chain of big box department stores. To connect with Canadian audiences and meet Canadian bilingual label requirements, Kmart needed a trusted translation partner to support its expansion into the Canadian market.

They contacted LAT for support with their Canadian labelling requirements. The original plan was to translate and review over 3,000 pieces of artwork between October and December 2022. Some files were in English only, while others required editing or retranslation.

Our team had to sift through the thousands of files to identify the most efficient method to meet the deadline, all while maintaining consistency and coordinating with various team members working on the bilingual labels project.

Canadian bilingual labels done right

We executed the project with a 5-step process.

  1. File preparation: We kicked things off by extracting all the necessary content from the files that needed to be translated and sorting them in batches according to the type of product.
  2. Translation: We translated the content (including any content that needed to be edited).
  3. Review: We then reviewed the translations.
  4. Consistency check: Consistency is key, so we did a final quality assurance step before moving on to delivery.
  5. Delivery: Finally, we rolled out the process and delivery in stages so our client's global team could continue working around the different time zones.

Throughout the entire project of localizing Kmart’s labels to meet Canada’s bilingual labelling requirements, we kept quality in mind by having a whole team of professional translators working on a single live document. This allowed all parties to follow terminology recommendations, flag issues, make edits, and get each label signed off by the lead reviser on the project.
